Patience Is The Key to Winning At The Races

by Marc Curthoys

So you want to make money from horse racing?

Well I can tell you that making money from horse racing can be easy. It just depends on how you go about it.

For a start, you have to have the right temperament to make money backing horses. You need patience.

Trying to find the winner of every race is the quickest way to being poor!

I call this 'chasing money'. Chasing money that isn't there! Trying to recoup what you've lost previously.

You do not want to do this. You are simply handing the bookmakers your money. If you are trying to make money from horse racing this way, you will never succeed. Stop now.

So what do you need to do to make money from this game?

Patience! Learn to control what you are doing. This is what I mean by having the right temperament.

You need to sit on the fence and wait for the right opportunity to come to you.

Dont be sucked in by the bookies, this is exactly what they want you to do, and this is how they make a lot of their money.

Ok, so I'll wait for the right opportunity. But how do I know when is the right opportunity?

There are many different ways of finding winners. You will use different techniques depending on the race type and amount of horses in a race.

You can make things easier for yourself by simply not betting on horses, in fields of more than 12 runners on the flat.

Do you watch racing? Do you know how much luck you need in those big field handicaps on the flat? Lots of it!

So start putting the odds in your favour by staying well clear of this type of race.

Look for small, uncompetitive races. You can assually rule out half the field on form which leaves you with a much easier task of finding the winner of the race.

Why make things more difficult for yourself?

Other races to leave are the ones where you have more than one horse in the race that you think could win.

Really, what is the point in betting on races like this?

If you look through a race card/form and find more than one horse that could win the race, look elsewhere. Don't take chances.

Because I know that after the race if the horse you backed gets beat, you will be telling yourself this, 'I knew that horse was a danger to my selection.'

Patience is the key. Remember that.
